Stop Thinking Easy

It seems that the natural tendency for us human beings is to look for the magic, quick fix solution all the time.

One of my interests in life is physical fitness.

In addition to the obvious benefits it brings, one of the things I like most about the field of physical fitness is that the underlying principles are exactly the same as those that apply in all areas of life (including work, career, management and so on).

The other night I was reading a leading author on the subject of physical fitness – Tom Venuto (of Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle fame). Tom reminds us:

“If an author or promoter of a product can convince you that you can achieve your dreams with a minimum of effort, their sales will skyrocket. A wise person knows that nothing ever comes fast and easy.”

Our society is so focused on the quick fix – take the tablet, go on the magic diet, give me the solution.

That’s not to say that you should choose a longer alternative just because it will take longer. And there is certainly a place for ‘smart work’.

But the truth is that good things generally take time (including organisational and club change).

So, the lesson for me is to be clear about what is important to me and to remember that good things usually take time and effort.
